I think it was 2005, and my husband and I were celebrating our first Valentine’s Day together in our new home as newlyweds. I was working in the Southbay, fighting a bearish commute each day, so my husband took it upon himself to plan a special dinner. He went to the Ferry Building (where I think he either locked his keys in his car or got a ticket…) and went to the Golden Gate Meat company to pick up some filets. Then he went to Tsar Caviar for some blinis and caviar. And his last stop was for dessert. He went to Ciao Bella, where he picked up some hazelnut gelato.
I loved that meal and that gelato; and perhaps a little because of taste and a little because of nostalgia, I still love Ciao Bella. There is a storefront for Ciao Bella in the Ferry Building, where my sons often take respite from busy Farmers Market Saturdays. Recently, Ciao Bella revamped their storefront and I went to event to check it out. It’s pretty, colorful, and whimsical. But the good news is that the gelato is still pretty darn tasty.
